Applicants must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a Vanier CGS quota and are expected to begin or continue full-time PhD studies in Canada. The program spans disciplines in health research, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a Vanier CGS quota
  • Enrolled in or applying to a full-time doctoral program in Canada
  • Must not have completed more than 20 months of PhD studies as of May 1, 2026
  • Demonstrated academic excellence, research potential, and leadership ability
  • Open to all nationalities
  • English or French language proficiency as per host university requirements

Application Process

  1. Choose a Canadian university with Vanier CGS quota
  2. Contact the university’s graduate studies office and seek nomination
  3. Prepare application on Research Net including:
    • Academic transcripts
    • Canadian Common CV (CCV)
    • Research proposal
    • Leadership and personal statements
    • Two letters of reference
    • Letters from nominating institution
  4. Institutional deadline: Between July and September 2025 (varies)
  5. National submission deadline: October 30, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. ET
  6. Results announced: April 2026
  7. Program begins: Fall 2026 (usually September)
