Program Overview!
The INSPIRE Scheme by India’s Department of Science & Technology is a visionary initiative crafted to ignite scientific curiosity, nurture budding talent, and build a strong R&D base—from middle school through faculty levels. With targeted opportunities including summer camps, scholarships, fellowships, and awards, INSPIRE empowers students and researchers at all stages to pursue scientific discovery with support and mentorship.
The Department of Science & Technology (DST), under the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, spearheads national efforts to develop scientific capabilities and innovation. The INSPIRE Scheme, launched in 2008, aligns with DST’s mission to nurture scientific talent across all educational stages—from inspiring middle schoolers through research-level opportunities—thus strengthening the country’s scientific and technological ecosystem.
INSPIRE operates across four key components:
- SEATS (Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent):
- MANAK Awards: ₹5,000 for top 1 million ideas from Classes 6–10
- Internship Camps: 5-day camps for top 1% Class 10 students, interacting with science icons (50,000 students annually)
- SHE (Scholarship for Higher Education):
- 12,000 scholarships/year for B.Sc., integrated M.Sc./M.S. and M.Sc. students aged 17–22; ₹80,000/year including mentorship grants
- INSPIRE Fellowship (PhD):
- 1,000 fellowships/year for MSc toppers (70%+ marks) or SHE scholars, supporting 5-year full-time PhD (JRF → SRF)
- INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship:
- 100–150 fellowships/year (PhD holders aged 27–32, relaxable for SC/ST/Women/disability to 37/42) providing ₹125,000/month + ₹7 lakh/year research funds over 5 years

Eligibility Criteria
- MANAK Awards: Class VI–X students with original science/tech ideas
- Internships: Top 1% of Class X board exams
- SHE Scholarship:
- Top 1% in Class XII boards, or
- Top 10,000 in JEE/AIPMT, or
- KVPY, NTSE, JBNSTS, Olympiad candidates in basic sciences
- PhD Fellowship: MSc holders (minimum 70% marks), SHE scholars or MSc toppers
- Faculty Fellowship: PhD holders with strong research track record aged 27–32 (age relaxations apply)
Application Process
- Apply online via the INSPIRE portal: online‑inspire.gov.in
- Regular calls issued per component—guidelines, format, eligibility, deadlines updated accordingly
- Required documents include academic transcripts, rank/marks certificates, research proposals (for fellowship/faculty), institute endorsements
- Selected SHE scholars must periodically upload performance reports and mentor approval; fellowship/faculty involve proposal evaluation and institute affiliation
